What could be wrong with a smile and a handshake?

I am just floored at the big to do that this handshake with Chavez is drawing. I mean, really...???? This is what we are harping on ALL day. God forbid, we have a leader who isn't a guns-a-blazing, alienating everyone that crosses his path. We have serious problems and THIS is what the GOP are crying about now. I watched Pat Buchanan almost set his hair on fire about this last night and it was pathetic.

Please someone tell me how this makes are country weaker. Now the GOP claims we should be worried about what terrorists construe from a picture of our president smiling and shaking hands with the President of Venezuela. When Bush was in office, we weren't supposed to care what the terrorists thought.... we don't change our agenda to react to them? But now we are supposed to.

It's really getting old.... the damned if you do, damned if you don't. Another example. Republicans have been harping on the large spending in Obama's budget. So, Obama announces that they are going to work towards trimming down... and they say..."It's only a drop in the bucket, it's showplay."... Well, I'm sorry but 100million dollars is a lot of money to me. And they were just out there talking about how 100m dollars in executives bonuses is a lot to the American people, despite it being only 1% of the total money that AIG received. So, 100m is a lot then, but NOT now?

The American people aren't going to tolerate 4 years of this! If they want any chance of survival, they need to respectfully disagree with the president, but then give him kudos for when things go right.

No kidding! We're just supposed to pretend Chavez doesn't exist, when he's in Obama's face giving him a gift? You have to live in reality, and figure out how to deal with these people, whether you like them or not. You can't just ignore them, or things get out of control very quickly.

I saw Newt talking smack about Obama's handshake on the Today show the other day. He is so running for President next time around! He's behind the tea parties, and he's everywhere bashing Obama.

As for the budget, the GOP quickly forgets that Obama included the costs of the wars in that budget. There's a reason that it's so large, and since Bush never included that in his budget it would seem on the surface that Obama is spending crazy amounts of money. In reality, he's just being honest about how much everything costs, and now he's trying to lower the spending where he can. I just wish the media spent more time discussing facts instead of hyping everything so we'll get our feathers ruffled. There's a reason the newspapers aren't doing so well-- Americans realize that they don't give us the facts anymore and that's what we all need right now more than anything!

It's called "diplomacy", and it's something that has been lacking in US politics for most of the last decade. I am thrilled that we finally have leadership that is utilizing this powerful tool once again. It has been ignored for far to long. The strong-arm tactics of the House of Bush were hideously unsuccessful. Time for a different approach.

Besides, as my ultra-conservative, right-wing, Bible-thumping grandma (God rest her soul) used to say...

"Honey, ya catch more flies with honey than with vinegar!"

I love Jon Stewart's take on current day politics and the GOP's shifting attitudes - characterizing the whole situation as Freaky Friday. And Jen, you are so right about the damned if you do, damned if you don't. Jon summarizes the R's views:

"So not only is Obama a total pussy who's gonna let Europe run roughshod over us, he's also an iron-fisted tyrant who will crush anyone who doesn't bend to his will."
